What inspired you to become a wedding planner?
I was in the banking industry right out of college and, although I was good at my job, I just wasn’t happy. For about a year my mom encouraged me to try wedding planning. She did her research and found The Bridal Society. She offered to pay for me to attend the conference but I counter offered and said I would pay for myself if she came and got certified as well. After attending the conference, I took everything we were taught to heart and hit the ground running. 1 year later I was able to quit my full-time job and put everything I could into Southern Sparkle.
What do you love most about being a wedding planner?
I really love the connections I have made within this industry. And not just with the vendors, but my clients and their families. The “repeat” clients where I have planned the wedding for all the daughters in one family. Or a client who has been in multiple weddings that I have planned and it is now her time to be a bride…those are some of my favorite moments of being a planner. Getting to become part of those families lives is something I will truly treasure.
How has your certification and membership with The Bridal Society helped you and your career?
The Bridal Society has put me where I am today. I am an award winning published wedding planner all because of The Bridal Society. It has given me the tools I need to succeed and the support I need to pursue my goals.
What does your average week look like?
I am a stay at home working mom, so each week is a whirlwind of a week. My son is in school on Tuesdays & Thursdays so those days are scheduled for out of office meetings and/or office days. On Monday and Wednesday, I sneak in the office during nap time to return emails and phone calls. Monday is also when I schedule out my weekly social media posts. Fridays are dedicated to wedding weekend prep which includes re-stocking my kit, prepping for rehearsal, and packing up my wedding day items. Saturday is the best day, WEDDING DAY! Sunday is typically spent on the couch watching The Golden girls and resting for the week ahead.
What is one item you can’t live without on a wedding day?
It’s a tie between our wedding day aprons and our walkie-talkies. Our aprons are stylish and functional and allows vendors, bridal party members and guests to know to come to us with their questions. Our walkie-talkies allow us to communicate efficiently. Especially here in the South with a ton of barn wedding venues, everything is so spread apart!
What type of client do you attract?
I quickly figured out what our “ideal client” is after my first year of business. We attract the client who wants to use professional wedding vendors on their wedding day. The items they “DIY” are smaller and not on a grand scale. Our clients understand the importance of a good team of wedding vendors. I would say the Southern Sparkle couple has a deep love for their families and having them involved in planning, but wants them to enjoy the wedding day. They love all things southern including delicious food and sweet tea. They realize that glamour doesn’t have to just be for a hotel wedding but can be added in their backyard or barn weddings. They understand and realize what the wedding day is all about – the beginning of their marriage.
What is your favorite moment on wedding day?
At the end of the night when our clients hug our necks and say everything was perfect. Even if I know there were some fires we had to put out, it’s my job to put those out without them knowing. So I always feel a sense of joy and pride when they say it was the perfect day.
What advice can you give and/or have you received that you can pass on to new/existing planners?
My motto from the very beginning of my career until now is “hustle until you no longer have to introduce yourself.” I think it can be so easy to just sit behind your computer/phone, have a gorgeous website and expect brides to come to you. It’s just not that way in this industry. Go out there and meet venue managers/owners, meet your favorite photographers for coffee and establish those key relationships. I promise you, you will have a year booked filled with weddings with these relationships and connections sending you business.
What advice do you have for engaged couples?
Hire a wedding planner! But seriously, I think some brides are afraid to reach out to a wedding planner because they assume we are all super expensive and a luxury they can’t afford. Planners offer so many great packages, so if you can’t afford the full planning package, there will be something within your budget. The piece of mind you will have on your wedding day will be worth every penny you spend on a planner, if not more.
